How to Have the Perfect Bar Setup

Libations with style.

As the holiday season gets underway—Thanksgiving is in a week!—those getting together or hosting festivities should pay heed to one of the evening’s most important components, the bar. A well-appointed trolley, table, or nook takes any soiree from fun to fabulous especially with the right tools and ingredients. “My favorite bar-related hack is to make a pitcher of a seasonal cocktail ahead of time so you can enjoy your guests instead of playing bartender,” shares Carly P. Moeller. Below, we asked some Freddie designers to decode their top tips. Santé!

Woody and Warm

Natural and dark wood hues lend themselves for classic setups but it’s the little details that raise the bar—get it!—with practicality and polish. “My essential bar tip is to mix vintage and new accessories,” says Moeller. “I love vintage glassware mixed with a contemporary tray or new cocktail shaker and bar tools.”

Luxe Libations

Just because bars are meant for fun, doesn’t mean they don’t need a style boost. Enter that eye-catching bar that captivates and becomes a spot meant for congregating with verve. And while often the key spot for guests at any party, designer Ritka Bhasin has a key tip for ensuring guests’s drinks don’t mingle. “I have a toddler and am always moving at parties,” says Bhasin, “[so] I feel the need for wine charms now more than ever.” She like the options from Joanna Buchanan featuring fun motifs like hearts, bees, and lips. However, her must for any event? “Lighting is key to create the mood—use dimmers, table lamps, and candles.”

Monochrome Magic

Those looking to incorporate and make an impact with their bars should stick to a single, eye-catching shade that takes center focus. For Willa Ford, that means a high gloss finish with equally distinctive accessories. “Don’t be afraid of colors that aren’t typical holiday colors,” she shares. “Buy multiple patterns and sets that coordinate—four of this and six of that. There are not rules here!” Her other top tip? Buy vintage. “It’s beautiful and unique, not to mention the most sustainable way to shop.”
